A Circle of Safety and Support could be an option for a woman struggling with issues of physical or emotional safety as a result of family violence. The circle process is designed for women who are in need of a higher level of safety planning than would generally take place in situations of family violence.

The woman, along with service providers, community members and personal support people collaborate to develop a comprehensive and effective safety plan, as well as emotional supports throughout the process.

Resources

Some examples of individuals that could be involved are:

Service Providers:
  • Police
  • Transition House Association
  • Victim Services Counsellor
Business and Community Members:
  • Employer
  • Schools
Family and Friends:
  • Parents
  • Siblings
  • Neighbours

Developed formally through a pilot project financially supported by the Women's Program, Status of Women Canada, the concept of Circles of Safety and Support was created in Prince Edward Island in response to one woman's request for help. Her story inspired a community of people to develop a comprehensive option for safe and effective safety and support planning for other women.
