Background x
The Woman Abuse and the PEI Legal System Research Team of the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence research is a partnership of community, university and government working together on the following objectives:
to learn more about the experiences of women, abused by their intimate partners, in the justice system in PEI;
to understand how the PEI justice system is presently responding to women, abused by their intimate partners, who enter the system and how that response has improved, if at all, with the increased awareness and training opportunities in the last decade;
to educate those working in the justice system about woman abuse and its effects on the abused women's participation in the legal process; and
to change the justice system to make it sensitive to the needs of survivors of family violence
The Research Team is comprised of:
Rona Brown, Family Violence Consultant, Province of PEI
Joanne Ings, Executive Director, Transition House Association
Kirstin Lund, community member
Ellie Reddin, Policy Advisory, Office of the Attorney General
Jean Mitchell, UPEI Department of Sociology/Anthropology
